The sphere, divided into eight identical sectors, can be taken apart. Two of the sectors, those carrying the heraldic crests of the Republic of Genoa and of Castille - Aragon, are fixed, while the other six can be moved in respect to each other. There is a single sequence of twelve movements that these six sectors can make to open the sphere.
